Cougars allow six unanswered goals in blowout loss to Victoria

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars gave up six unanswered goals to the Victoria Royals, who came away with a 6-1 at CN Centre Saturday (Dec. 27) night.

Five of those Royals goals came in the second period as both teams were playing their first game after the WHL’s week-long holiday break. It’s the third loss in a row for the Cougars who are without Joshua Ravensbergen and Carson Carels as the pair are away on World Juniors duty with Team Canada.

The floodgates opened in the second as Heath Nelson, Caleb Matthews, and Reggie Newman all found the back of the net in a 3:16 span to give the Royals the 4-0 lead. Nelson scored two more goals 90 seconds apart in the third period to complete his hat trick.

Corbin Vaughan scored the Cougars only goal of the game at 13:23 of the second period as he spoiled Ethan Eskit’s shutout bid. The Royals netminder finished with 25 saves on 26 shots.

Cougars goaltender Alexander Levshyn took the loss as he allowed five goals on 21 shots in 30:01 of work. Preston Lewis made seven saves on eight shots in 29:59 of relief work.

The win takes the Royals to 14-11-4-3 on the season while the Cougars drop to 22-10-1-0. Victoria occupies the final playoff spot in the Western Conference while the Cougars remain in second place.

The Cougars and Royals will rematch at the CN Centre this evening, Dec. 28. The Cougars will be wearing special black Batman-themed jerseys with warm-up capes in support of the Children’s Miracle Network.
