Looks still on the surface, but City says Prince George Aquatic Centre work is flowing

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Aquatic Centre started its two-year renovation in January. City councillor Trudy Klassen is wondering how much progress has been made. The City says there is plenty happening behind the scenes.

Looking from the outside, it does not appear that much is happening with the aquatic centre renovation, which started earlier this year. Councillor Trudy Klassen visited the site recently and said it did not look very active.

Klassen says people have raised these concerns before. She was among the councillors who asked many questions about the project’s timeline last fall. The renovation will cost 37 million dollars when finished.

Andy Beesley, the city’s facilities manager, says that while things may look quiet from the outside, the renovations are actually on schedule.

Beesley says the project has just finished the pre-construction phase. This important but mostly hidden work included draining and de-chlorinating the pools, which takes two weeks, and safely removing all electronics, bulkheads, and equipment before the main construction crews arrive.

Beesley says major construction inside the pool will begin in the coming days and weeks. Work outside should pick up when the weather warms up in spring. The city plans to give public updates every quarter, with the first full report to the council in April.
