PRINCE GEORGE – The College of New Caledonia (CNC) has been hosting a delegation from Switzerland this week, as the Goldau Vocational Training Centre (BBZG) has been visiting its Prince George, Quesnel, and Williams Lake campuses to learn more about trades education.

“They were interested to learn more about how we do trades training here in British Columbia, particularly in terms of the programs that we offer, the way we teach our students, and what our apprenticeship model looks like,” explained CNC’s Associate Director of International Student Services Anne Harris.

Prince George and Switzerland may not be the first pairing that comes to mind when thinking of potential partnerships for CNC, but Harris explained this delegation came from mutual interest from both the Swiss and B.C. Government to build more connections, adding the Swiss Government has been “really interested in discovering more about study abroad opportunities for some of their students.”

“That (study abroad) would always be perhaps our ultimate goal. But to start with, it’s all about building a relationship with another institution and just finding out if we have some things in common, that maybe we can share some ideas together,” Harris said.

She says the delegation has been very positive on many fronts, as both sides have been able to learn more about each other’s educational systems, and the Swiss side has enjoyed seeing Canadian culture up close, on top of meeting many industry partners.

“We’ve also had the opportunity to meet with some of our industry partners, so these are local businesses who support our programs and who are sometimes taking our graduates to work in their businesses or supporting our apprenticeship programs, so we were able to learn from them also about how the apprenticeship model we have in B.C. really supports them to grow their business,” Harris said.

Other topics discussed also included potential instructor exchanges, professional development opportunities, and more.
