PRINCE GEORGE – The House of Ancestors was busy with an enthusiastic crowd Wednesday as hundreds of hopeful candidates connected with employers and explored opportunities as the Prince George Native Friendship Centre hosted their semi-annual job fair in collaboration with WorkBC and the Prince George Nechako Aboriginal and Training Association. There were 36 employers present including Northern Health, Atco Gas and Pacific Coastal Airlines to name a few all there to scout for future employees. Being trained also is not a requirement as many of the employers on site provide training to potential prospects.

“We have a variety of different companies that are in the trades, but we also have companies that do training as well that provide training, like PGNAETA, the Native Friendship Centre and more.” said the PG Native Friendship Centre’s team lead for employment and training Cheryl Elgie.

In its 7th year the Job Fair continues to grow each time it’s held with over three hundred job seekers attending Wednesday’s event. The fair also take extra steps to provide clothing for participants who are unable to obtain clean work-ready clothes and offer support to create and update resumes onsite with the goal of offering everyone an opportunity.

“What we really want to achieve is a fantastic environment where job seekers can come in one easy accessible place with so many different industries and employers. Regardless of what type of position they’re looking for everything is all under one roof for them and it’s just simple.” said WorkBC employer and community coordinator Alexander Fegan.

There was also a focus among employers to increase diversity hires especially among the indigenous community.

“I am here today to educate people on jobs within Northern Health. We are really trying to increase our indigenous representation within Northern Health. We have a lot of great positions that we know we have people who would be great candidates, and we just want to educate them on the possibilities for their future.” said Northern Health’s Indigenous recruiterAngela Cooper.

If you missed today’s event they are held semi annually with another expected before the end of the year.
