PRINCE GEORGE – The Ronald McDonald House at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) will soon be seeing upgrades to its kitchen, thanks to a partnership between the Prince George Community Foundation and the Rotary Club of Prince George Downtown. This partnership will see the Community Foundation grant $20,000 to the Ronald McDonald House to upgrade and renovate its kitchen.

“This is exactly the kind of project that reflects the heart of our community. When families are facing some of their most difficult moments, access to simple comforts, like a proper meal or a welcoming place to sit together, can make a meaningful difference. We’re proud to partner with Rotary to help make that possible.,” said the Community Foundation’s Executive Director Rae-Ann Noonan.

“(The kitchen) needs a whole bunch of renovations to make it more accessible, and it currently doesn’t have an oven for people to cook and use, so that will be great,” she added.

The Ronald McDonald House gives families a chance to stay with their children when their children are in the hospital, keeping families together during challenging times. However, both the Community Foundation and the Rotary Club say the current kitchen facilities are limited, so the $20,000 worth of upgrades will introduce modern appliances, improved workspace, and a more functional layout.

“This project is about dignity, comfort, and care. Through Rotary’s fundraising efforts and the support of partners like the Prince George Community Foundation, we are working to create a space that truly reflects the compassion of our community,” said Mindy Stroet, President of the Rotary Club of Prince George Downtown.

Noonan adds the Community Foundation did play a role in the initial opening of the Ronald McDonald House, and she’s happy to further its efforts through kitchen improvements, a vital part of any home.

“The importance of a kitchen is that people can have some home cooked meals and share meals together and bake and do simple, normal activities while they’re in the Ronald McDonald House,” Noonan said.

Total funding for this project was raised through a combination of donations, the Community Foundation’s grant, and the ‘Rotary STOMP!’ which is a major fundraising event.
