PRINCE GEORGE – Adventures in Healthcare is returning for another year to shape the future of health care professionals. Starting May 3, Adventures in Healthcare will see 60 grade ten and eleven students get a head start on post secondary by exploring careers in healthcare and human services. The program is a collaboration between the Rotary of Prince George, UNBC, the College of New Caledonia (CNC), Northern Health and School District 57 and will highlight a range of fields including medicine, nursing, physical therapy, dental hygiene, chemistry and social work. The program is aimed to keep talented healthcare professionals in the North.

“These lucky students who have applied and have been selected for the program will get hands on experience in a variety of educational opportunities, as well as career opportunities that exist in health care here in the North. This program will show them what is it like to study and learn about being a health care provider, and why it’s a great idea to stay here in the North for their training.” said Dean of the Faculty of Human and Health Sciences at UNBC, Dr. Nathan Lachowsky.

With a large need for healthcare professionals in British Columbia, further increased by an aging population, the benefits of early recruitment could have effects across the province.

“There’s statistics right now that show that there’s over 200,000 job openings within health sciences and human services within British Columbia. It’s about getting students interested in health sciences and human services early, so they make the right decisions in high school to set them up for success in college.” said CNC’s Manager of Critical Placements for Health Sciences and Human Services, Erin Busker-Molen.

After nearly a decade since it’s inception, there is still a lot of excitement when the program starts up. Dr. Lachowsky says there is really no other program like this in the North and it is a excellent opportunity to those students who are passionate about healthcare.

“We’re seeing a lot of excitement in students for this program and the ability for them to get a hands on experience while they’re still in high school. What that path could look like in post-secondary towards their dreams and aspirations as a health care provider is really exciting. What we see is those students who train and spend time here in the North are more likely to stay, and that’s really important for our local communities and for our health care system. ” added Dr. Lachowsky.

Though there are only 60 lucky students able to participate in this years program, expansion into other cities indicates this program could grow much larger sooner rather then later.

“It has the potential to get a lot bigger. We have recently started doing Adventures in Healthcare in Quesnel and I understand there’s interest in other school districts. We’d love to see the opportunity to bring those students into the college, and showcase our programs.” added Busker-Molen.

Adventures in Health runs from May 3 until May 5 and will include sessions at AimHi, CNC, UNBC and Northern Health.
