CNC approves balanced budget despite campus closure and job losses

PRINCE GEORGE — The College of New Caledonia (CNC) approved a balanced 2026-27 budget Friday afternoon, but it didn’t come without significant challenges. The College notes the budget reflects significant sector-wide pressures, including changes to international student policy and declining tuition revenue.

Difficult decisions were required, including the closure of the Fort St. James campus and workforce adjustments – which include the elimination of vacant positions and retirements, in addition to layoffs.

The College wouldn’t give the exact number of layoffs Friday, though CNC’s Faculty Association estimates 28% of faculty jobs at the college have been cut. The union also points out that 26 programs have been either cancelled or suspended.

Despite the devastating news, CNC President Cindy Heitman says “the school remains committed to putting students first.”
