Punjabi class debuts

PRINCE GEORGE – Peden Hill Elementary in Prince George has started the first Punjabi language class in School District 57. This gives students an opportunity to connect with their culture and community.

The after-school program began after parents shared worries that children were losing their ability to speak Punjabi and to talk with their grandparents. Principal Nicole Polhuis says students responded right away, with many signing up as soon as they heard about it.

About 40 percent of students at the school come from Indo-Canadian backgrounds, making for a strong South Asian community. The class welcomes all students, whether they are beginners or already know some Punjabi.

Educational assistant Kamaljeet Saini leads the program, which helps students build basic language skills and feel proud of their culture. She says learning Punjabi brings generations closer together and helps families connect.

Students say the class is already helping them feel more confident when speaking and understanding Punjabi.

The initiative has B.C. Premier David Eby also recognized the program, sending a letter to praise the school’s work in promoting diversity and inclusion. The hope is to expand the program to more grades next year.
