Church turns parking lot into sanctuary

“We were just looking at what our options were,” said lead pastor Dan Hoffman. “On a Sunday morning, all the churches are busy. This was the best spot for us.”

The church set up folding chairs, portable speakers, a small music area, and a coffee station in the parking lot. Hoffman said the transition went more smoothly than expected, partly because the congregation did something similar during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our leaders got together and said, ‘Hey, we’ve done this before. Let’s try it again.”

The response from the broader faith community has been immediate. Hoffman says other churches across Prince George reached out offering their spaces and support within hours of the fire.

“All the churches across Prince George were reaching out and offering assistance in any way they could. It’s fun to be part of a community like this.”

The outdoor services have included a baptism, with the water heated in advance, and nine baby dedications are planned for the coming Sunday. Hoffman said that although a brief rain shower ended one service early, everyone’s spirits are still high.

Hoffman said the congregation might meet outdoors for 4 to 6 months while repairs are checked and a temporary indoor space is found. He expects the church to be back indoors soon.

He also points to a larger moment of unity in the city. 17 Prince George churches are planning a joint outdoor worship service at a local park on June 14.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
