PRINCE GEORGE – The inaugural Prince Hoops 3 on 3 basketball tournament tips off this weekend at the Connaught Youth Centre, bringing a fast-paced, high-stakes atmosphere to the heart of Prince George. Starting on Saturday, the two-day event features local athletes competing for substantial cash prize. Beyond the non-stop half-court action, the tournament serves a community mission.

“Relay for life is hosting a concession with all proceeds going to them and their event as well. We’re expecting about 14 teams of four who also will be competing for a $1,400 prize pot, and we’re donating the leftover proceeds to Jumpstart to help bring, recreation for the youth closer to home as well.” says the Director of Community Engagement for Relay for Life Zoe Younghusband.

With this being the first tournament expectations are high and the team is already looking at ways to make it bigger, better and more frequent.

“This is the first one. We’re hoping this goes fantastic so we can plan for more future ones, maybe twice a year even. We’re just very excited for this tournament and we’re hoping it can bring the community together, both basketball and just the community in general.” said the Head Coordinator of the Prince Hoops 3 on 3 Tournament Arman Mangat.

Younghusband says these events are important for the community as they showcase what the North has to offer and will offer many local athletes an opportunity to stay closer to home while attracting athletes from out of town with top level events.

“I think it’s just really important for us that when we started up this nonprofit organization, just being able to support other nonprofits in our community and really what made this organization sprout is just bringing recreation closer to the north as a lot of individuals from here travel to other communities to go compete. I think it’s important to keep that recreation within the adult population as well as children.” added Younghusband.

The inaugural Prince Hoops 3v3 Basketball Tournament takes place from 10 am to 3 pm Saturday and Sunday at the Connaught Youth Centre with proceeds going to local charities.
