Former RCMP Detachment To Go
PRINCE GEORGE — Mayor and Council also passed the capital budget during Monday night’s budget discussions. A total of $27 million capital projects are on the list for this year, including the demolition of the former RCMP detachment on Brunswick Street. The City had the building for sale since the RCMP moved into the new detachment on Victoria Street.
“Over the last four or five years, since it was last used for the Canada Winter Games, we’ve numerous groups go through it, looking at ‘Can we re-purpose it for office-use?’ stuff like that,” explains Ian Wells, the General Manager of Planning and Development. “The structure needs new plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. So there was no interest in that building. It’s a worn-out building.”
The 13,000 square foot building was, firstly, the courthouse before it became the RCMP detachment. The City has set aside $755,000 to demolish it, something Wells feels will cover even the potential of asbestos in the facility.
“I think that’s an accurate number, looking at some of the other demos that have occurred around the city. We’ve got hazmat studies looking at what the dangerous materials that may be in the building. That seems an appropriate number.”
