50/50 winner left speechless

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Spruce Kings concluded their season with a record-setting 50/50 draw that sold out on deadline day, awarding a life-changing jackpot to a local winner.

Kyle Anderson, executive director of business operations, explained that the team’s community-owned model makes fundraising vital for maintaining competitiveness in the BC Hockey League. “If there was no lottery, this team wouldn’t be here,” Anderson said. The mega 50/50 draw, one of five major draws the team holds, sold over 650 tickets in less than six hours on deadline day, a pace Anderson described as more exciting than nerve-wracking.

“It was more about the excitement of when we would sell out,” he said. “Seeing over 700 tickets sold in the first 11 hours, and nearly 650 between 6 a.m. and 11:28 a.m., made it enjoyable to watch the jackpot grow.”

The winner, Keith Annis, a Prince George resident, answered Anderson’s call in stunned silence. Anderson recalled a similar reaction from last year’s draw, when a winner at a McDonald’s with her children was so overwhelmed she could barely respond, while her children reacted in the background. “It’s a life-changing amount,” Anderson said. “Even $200,000 is significant for people, and having a local winner in Prince George means even more to us as a community-owned team.”

Cody Malbeuf, program and promotions director at Pattison Media in Prince George, noted that the last-minute surge is a familiar pattern and a source of local pride.

“We are definitely a last-minute town,” Malbeuf said. “It’s great to see this with raffle tickets, as the numbers increase all at once.” The community’s generosity isn’t about the prize. “Prince George turns out every single time. It’s not because you’re trying to win a house. It’s because the Spruce Kings need me. Hospice needs me. And Prince George is great at stepping up for the organizations that need them.”

Looking ahead, Anderson said the team is already planning next year’s show home lottery. He also mentioned an announcement planned for late June or early July, indicating the team is exploring creative ways to address rising costs in junior hockey operations.
