PRINCE GEORGE – The federal government has announced a new plan to guide how artificial intelligence is used in Canada’s public service. Ottawa’s AI Strategy for the Federal Public Service is a two-year roadmap that will run until 2027, according to a Government of Canada news release.

The plan has four main goals: building central AI expertise, improving policy and governance, reducing the 30% vacancy rate in digital jobs, and making AI use more open to the public.

The government plans to establish an AI Centre of Expertise and to label AI-generated content. At the same time, it is setting clear limits. Officials say AI should not be used for criminal justice decisions, hiring, or deciding who gets social services.

The strategy was created after talking with academics, Indigenous organizations, labour groups, and the public. It aims for inclusive design and tries to lower environmental impacts.
