PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George City Council is being asked to take a closer look at the long-term costs of operating Kopar Memorial Arena.

A motion from Mayor Simon Yu would direct Administration to prepare a report detailing the arena’s annual operating costs, revenues, and taxpayer subsidy, along with projected maintenance, rehabilitation, or replacement costs over the next 10, 20, and 30 years.

The report would also explore alternative funding options, including public-private partnerships, private investment, sponsorship opportunities, Indigenous partnerships, and community-based funding models.

Mayor Yu says the goal is not to predetermine the arena’s future, but to provide Council and the public with clear financial information before any major spending decisions are made.

Yu says that “at a time when residents are facing increasing financial pressures, it is prudent to explore whether partnerships with the private sector, community organizations, Indigenous governments, sponsors, or other funding partners could help address future facility needs while reducing reliance on property tax increases and debt financing.” The motion cites fiscal responsibility, sustainable infrastructure planning, and reducing future taxpayer burden as key priorities.
