PRINCE GEORGE- In the Jack Bryant Room at Studio 2880, a group of local seniors gather for a different kind of morning routine. Trading morning chores for easels and color palettes, they find joy and vibrant creative community right in the heart of Prince George. For more then three years the Community Arts Council of Prince George has been running the Seniors Paint club. The club provides a cost friendly accessible, social environment where older adults can explore painting while socializing, learning new skills and remaining active.

“There’s groups that usually come in and when the groups come in they try and get a table together and paint. There’s lots of singles that come in as well, and they’re learning. What I do notice is that they’re actually improving, immensely. They may not think they are, but I’ve seen them from day one and they’re getting better and better. So that’s quite satisfying for me.” said Acrylics Teacher Marilyn Schmaus.

For many of the participants remaining active while forging new relationships with similar minded individuals seems to be a bonus in addition to learning a new skill.

“I believe its an escape from reality from everyday life. It’s also a seniors paint class so you’re painting with a lot of really like minded people. It’s budget friendly so that allows us to get out of the house and do something creative.” said student Lorraine Elliott.

For the first two years of the program the Club has offered 8 classes in the spring followed by 8 classes in the fall but this year due to high demand the club is expanding.

“There’s such high demand and I can only offer so much of my time, but I was able to squeeze in a summer session this year. So going forward, we hope to do like eight classes this spring, eight in the summer and then eight in the fall. The summer ones are tricky because people are busy and they’re so busy doing different activities. A lot of people don’t don’t go away for the whole summer and they’re here all summer long. We’re finding the classes are filling up just as fast as they did for the other season so it’s going really good.” said Watercolor Teacher Lorri Anne Maley-Bell

The Seniors Paint Club is currently in it’s summer program and runs twice a week offering Watercolor and Acrylic painting.
