PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George is set for a high-energy weekend as one of British Columbia’s fastest-growing rodeos returns with bigger crowds, more competitors, and plenty of adrenaline-filled action. Organizers say this year’s event is shaping up to be one of the largest on the provincial circuit, drawing top talent from across B.C. and Alberta. From bull riding to barrel racing, fans can expect a full slate of rodeo favourites.

“This weekend? We got a ton of good events here,” said Kevin Cunin, President of Rodeo Prince George. “We got the big Friday night barrel race tonight… then Saturday, Sunday we have the rodeo.”

The event features all eight major rodeo competitions, including bareback, saddle bronc, and steer wrestling. Coonan says participation is at an all-time high.

“We got the biggest entries in B.C. so far this year,” he said. “Between Saturday and Sunday alone we have 40 bulls getting bucked and 40 broncs getting back… that’s heads and tails above any other rodeo in B.C. so far this year.”

Livestock and competitors are travelling from across Western Canada, ensuring top-tier performances for fans in the stands.

“We got animals and livestock coming in from B.C. and Alberta… to have absolutely the best right here,” Cunin added.

Vice President Chris Scott says the numbers tell the story of the event’s rapid growth.

“It’s one of the biggest and best rodeos in the province. We keep growing year after year,” Scott said. “This is year five for us… it’s just looking really good this weekend.”

Organizers expect close to 400 competitors and thousands of spectators to attend.

“We’re going to be probably close to 400 competitors… riding horses, riding bulls, chasing steers. It’s going to be phenomenal,” Scott said.

The excitement kicks off Friday night with a jackpot barrel race expected to draw more than 150 riders, along with a mechanical bull competition in the beer gardens.

“If you haven’t been down to watch these barrel races, it’s fast, it’s intense… it’s really entertaining to watch,” Scott said.

The full rodeo action begins Saturday and continues through Sunday, with gates opening early and events starting in the afternoon. Off the dirt, the event also features food vendors, family activities, and a fan zone where kids can try roping and other rodeo skills.

“There’s just a ton of things to do for the whole family down here,” Scott said.

Saturday night will also feature a live performance from Canadian country star Gord Bamford, adding to what organizers describe as a full weekend experience.

Cunin says the rodeo is a major stop on the B.C. Rodeo Association tour and plays a key role in the season standings for competitors.

“This is one of the big deals right here,” he said. “This is going to be the most action-packed… Prince George is going to see this summer.”

With strong ticket sales and sunny weather in the forecast, organizers are encouraging residents to secure their spots early for what promises to be a standout summer event.
