Construction set to begin on new Austin Road child care centre

PRINCE GEORGE — Ground has broken on new child care centre in the Hart, as School District 57 moves forward with a long‑planned project at 4543 W. Austin Road.

The district announced an update on the 62-space facility, first outlined in a September 28, 2023 news release. Funding for the project was secured in September 2023 through contributions from the federal and provincial governments under the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund.

Since then, work has progressed through several stages. The former Austin Road Elementary School building on the site was demolished in the summer of 2024. The project then underwent an extensive design and budgeting process, spanning from September 2023 to February 2026.

The construction contract was tendered and awarded in April 2026, and building is expected to begin in June. The new centre is anticipated to open in the summer of 2027.

Once completed, the facility will offer 62 child care spaces, including:

  • 12 spaces for children under 36 months,
  • 25 spaces for children aged 30 months to school age, and
  • 25 spaces for school-aged children.

School District 57 Superintendent and CEO Jameel Aziz said the project will help address a growing demand for child care services in the city.

“SD57 is pleased to see progress being made on the critical need for childcare in Prince George,” Aziz said. “This centre will provide much-needed space in the Hart area. We look forward to the progress and completion of this project in 2027.”
