Prince George under severe thunderstorm watch

Jun 25, 2026 | 9:56 AM

Prince George – Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George, warning that conditions are ripe for powerful storms to develop later today.

The yellow-level watch, which indicates a moderate-impact event with high forecast confidence, was issued Thursday morning and remains in effect for the city and nearby areas.

Forecasters say the storms that develop could be capable of producing:

* Strong wind gusts

* Large hail

* Heavy rain

Drivers are being warned that road conditions may deteriorate quickly once storms move in, with reduced visibility and the potential for ponding on highways.

Environment Canada is reminding residents of a few key safety steps as the system approaches:

* When thunder roars, go indoors. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

* Secure loose objects around your yard, such as patio furniture, garbage bins, trampolines, and anything else that could be picked up by strong winds.

* Plan ahead if you’re heading out on the road, and give yourself extra time.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for storms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain. A watch may be upgraded to a warning if storms begin to develop and intensify.

Residents are asked to continue monitoring Environment Canada alerts and forecasts throughout the day.
