Weekend lightning sparks wildfires in Prince George region
PRINCE GEORGE – A weekend of intense lightning activity across northern British Columbia has sparked dozens of new wildfires and prompted concerns that more fire starts could emerge in the days ahead.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, approximately 33,380 lightning strikes were recorded across the province between Wednesday and Sunday. Nearly 25,000 of those strikes occurred within the Prince George Fire Centre, leading to a surge in wildfire activity throughout the region.
Fire Information Officer Muhammad Tariq said the lightning generated a significant number of new fire starts, particularly across the Prince George Fire Centre.
“Prince George fire center received close to about 25,000 lightning strikes just over the weekend. Significant lightning activity caused active wildfire starts within the Prince George and the red zone specifically. And our BC Wildfire Service crews responding to those incidents and assessing them as the new wildfire reports are detected,” said Tariq.
