Canfor Leisure Pool to close for annual maintenance

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George residents will temporarily lose access to the Canfor Leisure Pool next month as the facility undergoes its annual maintenance shutdown.

The City of Prince George has announced the pool will close from August 17 to September 6 for scheduled cleaning, inspections, and repairs. The facility is expected to reopen on September 7 at 11:30 a.m.

City officials say annual maintenance is necessary to ensure aquatic facilities remain safe, clean, and well maintained for public use. Because the Prince George Aquatic Centre is currently closed for renovations, the City has condensed the Canfor Leisure Pool maintenance schedule into a three-week period to reduce the overall disruption to swimmers.

During the closure, crews will drain the pools, deep clean the facility, inspect and repair equipment, and begin work on an HVAC improvement project.

Civic Facilities and Events Director Andy Beesley says the maintenance period was scheduled for late summer because it coincides with a break in swimming lessons and local swim club programming while many residents are still able to take advantage of outdoor recreational activities.

Beesley acknowledged the temporary loss of pool access will be inconvenient for some users but noted staff worked to shorten the closure from four weeks to three, the minimum amount of time required to complete the necessary work.

The City says it looks forward to welcoming swimmers back on Labour Day weekend and encourages residents to visit the City website for updates on aquatic programming and the ongoing Aquatic Centre renovation project.
