B.C. declares State of Emergency as wildfire forces mass evacuations, possible fatality under investigation
SUMMERLAND — British Columbia has declared a state of provincial emergency as a fast-moving wildfire in the South Okanagan continues to spread, forcing the evacuation of about 20,000 people and prompting a massive emergency response effort.
The Bald Ridge wildfire, first reported Friday evening, grew rapidly amid strong winds, pushing toward Summerland and Peachland and threatening communities throughout the surrounding valleys. Provincial officials say homes and other properties have been destroyed, while dozens of residents required rescue after becoming trapped as fire conditions changed quickly.
The emergency escalated further Saturday after RCMP confirmed they are investigating a possible fatality linked to the wildfire.
In a statement, Southeast District RCMP said a resident of Meadow Valley, west of Summerland, reported a possible death in the fire zone. Police and the BC Coroners Service are working to confirm the report, but ongoing hazardous conditions have complicated access to the area.
