Under the order, Category 2 fires are prohibited. These include:

• One pile of material up to two metres high and three metres wide
• Two piles of material, each up to two metres high and three metres wide
• Grass or stubble burning covering less than 0.2 hectares

Category 3 fires are also prohibited. These include:

• Three or more burn piles
• Any pile larger than two metres high or three metres wide
• Windrows up to 200 metres long and 15 metres wide
• Grass or stubble burning over an area greater than 0.2 hectares

Several other activities and equipment are also banned under the order, including:

• Fireworks
• Binary exploding targets
• Burn barrels and burn cages
• Controlled-air incinerators
• Air curtain burners
• Carbonizers

While the provincial prohibition generally excludes lands within municipal boundaries, local governments may impose their own restrictions. Residents are encouraged to check with their municipality, regional district or improvement district for any additional fire bans that may be in effect.

The BC Wildfire Service warns that violating an open burning prohibition can result in serious penalties.

Anyone found contravening the ban may face:

• A ticket of $1,150
• An administrative penalty of up to $10,000
• Court-imposed fines of up to $100,000
• Up to one year in jail

If an illegal fire causes or contributes to a wildfire, the penalties can increase to fines of up to $1 million, up to three years in jail, and responsibility for all firefighting and associated costs.

The Prince George Fire Centre is asking the public to continue reporting wildfires, unattended campfires and open burning violations by:

• Calling 1-800-663-5555
• Dialling *5555 from a cellphone
• Using the BC Wildfire Service mobile app, which allows users to submit photos and reports, even in areas with limited service

Wildfire officials say public cooperation remains critical in preventing human-caused fires during the remainder of the wildfire season.
