BC Conservative MLA Ian Paton leaves caucus, plans new political party

DELTA, B.C. – Delta South MLA Ian Paton has become the second MLA in recent weeks to leave the BC Conservative caucus, announcing Monday that he will sit as an Independent while working toward the creation of a new political party in the legislature.
In a statement, Paton said the party under leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay has taken a direction that no longer aligns with his political beliefs. Paton joined the BC Conservatives in 2024, saying at the time he believed it could become a broad coalition focused on responsible government, private enterprise, fiscal discipline and economic growth.
“It has become clear to me that the new direction of the Conservative Party of BC under the leadership of Kerry-Lynne Findlay is no longer aligned with my beliefs,” Paton said.
The veteran MLA, who has represented Delta South since 2017, said his primary responsibility is to the constituents who elected him rather than to a political party.
