German midfielder joins UNBC Timberwolves

PRINCE GEORGE — The UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team has added another international recruit to its roster, announcing the signing of German midfielder Simon Odenthal.

The 19-year-old arrives in Prince George from Arzbach, Germany, where he developed his game with EGC Wirges under head coach Sven Baldus. Odenthal joins the Timberwolves after an impressive season that saw him record nine goals and 10 assists.

Primarily playing as a central attacking midfielder or false nine, Odenthal is expected to add offensive creativity and versatility to the Timberwolves lineup.

Odenthal said the opportunity to play soccer while pursuing a Civil Engineering degree at UNBC made the move to Canada an easy decision. He also pointed to Timberwolves head coach Steve Simonson as a key factor in choosing the program.

“What impressed me about Coach Steve is that he has already been so long in this league and at this university, and the fact that he is both a good coach and a great person,” said Odenthal.

Simonson believes the German midfielder will make an immediate impact.

“Simon has been an incredible addition to our program,” Simonson said. “He is a very well-rounded attacking player with a versatility that allows him to play in a variety of ways within our team.”

Beyond the coaching staff and facilities, Odenthal said the welcoming atmosphere among his future teammates also stood out during the recruiting process.

He noted that despite players coming from different backgrounds and countries, the team has built a strong culture and sense of unity.

The newest Timberwolf will have an early chance to showcase his abilities when UNBC opens its home schedule against Thompson Rivers University on Friday night. The match is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff in Prince George.

UNBC Athletics says it is excited to welcome Odenthal to the Timberwolves family as the program continues building for the future.
