IIO concludes investigation into Prince George RCMP arrest

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has concluded its investigation into an arrest involving Prince George RCMP and a commercial truck driver earlier this summer.

The incident occurred on August 10, 2026, shortly after 3:30 p.m., when an RCMP officer stopped a commercial truck travelling south on Highway 97 near Bear Lake.

According to the IIO, a physical confrontation took place between the officer and the driver during the traffic stop. Police also deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon, commonly known as a Taser, during the arrest.

The driver sustained injuries and contacted the IIO the following day, prompting the civilian oversight agency to launch an investigation.

Investigators reviewed evidence including body-worn camera footage, police records and medical records related to the incident.

After examining the evidence, the IIO’s chief civilian director determined the injuries suffered by the driver did not meet the threshold of “serious harm” as defined under the Police Act.

As a result, the matter has been referred back to the RCMP for review and to determine whether any further action is appropriate under the RCMP Act.

The IIO says its involvement in the case has now concluded.

The Independent Investigations Office is B.C.’s civilian police oversight agency and is responsible for investigating officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, regardless of whether there are allegations of wrongdoing.
