Forestry groups, MLA call for urgent action as B.C. industry faces growing crisis
PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-North Cariboo Conservative MLA and Opposition House Leader Sheldon Clare is backing a call from 15 forestry organizations for the provincial government to establish a Forestry Crisis Action Group, saying immediate action is needed to protect jobs and keep the industry operating in communities across British Columbia.
The call comes in a letter sent to Premier David Eby on September 4 by a coalition representing workers, manufacturers, contractors, businesses and forest-dependent communities. The groups warn B.C.’s forest sector is at a “breaking point” and urge the province to convene a Forestry Crisis Action Group led by the Premier’s Office to address mounting challenges facing the industry. Their proposed mandate includes reducing costs, removing regulatory barriers, improving fibre access and retaining forestry workers.
Speaking to CKPG News Thursday, Sheldon Clare said the concerns outlined by industry mirror what he and the Opposition have been raising for months.
“We do support what these organizations have been saying, and they are highlighting things we’ve been saying for the last year since we’ve been in opposition,” Clare said.
