Oakes was re-elected as Cariboo North MLA in the 2017 and 2020 provincial elections. After her BC United Party, formerly known as the BC Liberals, folded its campaign ahead of the 2024 provincial election, Oakes ran as an independent candidate in the newly formed Prince George-North Cariboo riding. She finished a distant second to BC Conservative candidate Sheldon Clare.

Waters is taking a second crack at the Quesnel mayoral seat. He finished fourth among four candidates in the 2022 municipal election with 50 votes. 

Meantime, 18 candidates are vying for the remaining six seats on Quesnel council. The list, in alphabetical order, is:

Candidates had until the end of the day Friday (Sept. 11) to enter the race to run for elected municipal office in B.C. 

The City of Quesnel says the list remains unofficial, pending nomination challenges and the closing of the withdrawal period on Friday, Sept. 18, at 4:00 p.m.
