Prince George residents reminded to secure bear attractants as sightings increase
PRINCE GEORGE — The City of Prince George is reminding residents to secure garbage and other wildlife attractants as bear activity increases throughout the community.
City officials say they have already responded to more than 160 wildlife attractant complaints in 2026 and expect that number to rise as bears continue searching for food sources in residential neighbourhoods.
The City works alongside the BC Conservation Officer Service, the Northern Bear Awareness Society and the RCMP during bear season to reduce human-wildlife interactions and educate residents about local bylaws.
Under Prince George’s Property Maintenance Bylaw, residents can face a $300 fine for leaving attractants such as garbage, bird feeders, fruit or other food sources accessible to bears and wildlife. The City’s Garbage Regulation Bylaw also restricts when garbage cans can be placed at the curb. Containers may only be set out between 4 a.m. and 7 p.m. on collection day, with violations carrying a $100 fine.
