PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Kiel Giddens has officially launched his re-election campaign, seeking another term under the Conservative banner in the upcoming provincial election.

Giddens, who has represented the riding for the past two years, said the decision to run again was driven by a desire to continue advocating for northern communities and the industries that support them.

“It’s been the honour of a lifetime to serve the people of Prince George-Mackenzie,” Giddens said during an interview announcing his candidacy.

The incumbent said resource-sector jobs will remain a central focus of his campaign. He emphasized the importance of protecting forestry and other resource industries that play a major role in the northern economy.

“We need to fight tooth and nail for resource-sector jobs in this part of the province,” Giddens said.

Health care is also expected to be a major campaign issue. Giddens pointed to the lack of cardiac care services in northern B.C. and stressed the importance of ensuring continued progress on expansion projects at the University Hospital of Northern B.C.

“We’re still the only part of the province that doesn’t have cardiac care,” he said.

Looking back on his first term, Giddens highlighted his advocacy for industrial and forestry workers as some of his proudest accomplishments. He cited his efforts on behalf of workers connected to major employers, including Tidewater and Northwood, while also calling for a long-term stabilization plan for the forestry sector.

Beyond his role as MLA, Giddens said he has played a significant part in preparing the Conservative Party for a provincial campaign. As the party’s election readiness chair, he helped coordinate campaign preparations and candidate nominations across British Columbia.

Giddens also voiced his support for Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson, saying he believes the party is prepared to offer stable leadership and a united alternative to the governing NDP.

Voters in Prince George-Mackenzie will head to the polls on October 24. As of 2:20 p.m. on October 2, no other candidates had declared their candidacy in the riding. The deadline to do so is at 1 p.m. on October 3.
