Top prospect visits Prince George

Prince George-The Prince George Cougars will face one of their toughest challenges of the young Western Hockey League season tonight when they welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings to CN Centre.

Brandon arrives in Prince George with a 2-1 record and high expectations entering the season. The Wheat Kings are led by 2027 NHL Draft top prospect Jaxon Jacobson, one of the most highly regarded young players in the WHL and a player expected to hear his name called early when he becomes draft eligible. Despite the team’s strong start, Jacobson believes Brandon is still searching for its identity.

“I think for us, the biggest thing is just finding our game, finding our identity,” said Jacobson. “I don’t think we’ve done that yet. We’ve been two and one which is good, but we definitely got a lot of room to grow.”

The highly touted draft prospect has yet to record a point this season, but he remains focused on the process rather than the statistics.

“Just stick to the process,” he said. “Stick to doing little things right and just getting to my game. Going to help our team get to our game.”

Despite Prince George’s slow start, Jacobson expects a difficult matchup. He says both clubs share a similar work ethic and the outcome could come down to which team is willing to compete harder.

“They’re known as a hardworking team, and I think so are we,” said Jacobson. “So just outworking them in every aspect of the game. I think we’re prepared for it and we’re ready to go.”

For the Cougars, containing Brandon’s talented offensive group will be a priority. Forward Kayden Lemire says the focus isn’t on shutting down one player, but rather playing the team’s game against every opponent.

“There’s a lot of skilled guys in this league,” Lemire said. “I think you don’t take anyone lightly.”

Lemire believes the Cougars’ success will come from sticking to their identity.

“Everyone’s got to play hard,” he said. “That’s kind of our system. We like to play physical, we like to play fast, and we like to play hard and compete.”

Cougars head coach Mark Lamb knows Jacobson will eventually find his offensive touch, but he cautions that Brandon’s attack extends well beyond a single player.

“Jacobson, he’s rated very high,” Lamb said. “He’s one of their best players, but he’s not their whole team, that’s for sure.”

Lamb expects the Wheat Kings forward to break through sooner rather than later.

“He doesn’t have a point and he’s their number one scorer,” said Lamb. “I don’t expect him not to have points for the rest of the year. That’s how good he is.”

With Brandon bringing one of the league’s most dangerous offensive groups to town, Lamb believes the game will provide an early measuring stick for his club.

“They’ve got a really high offensive group,” he said. “They’re a team that’s rated very high this year, and it’s going to be a real good test for us.”

Puck drop is set for tonight at CN Centre as the Cougars look to make a statement against one of the WHL’s top contenders.
