More than 1,700 drivers caught speeding in Prince George school zones

PRINCE GEORGE — More than one-third of drivers monitored during a month-long Prince George RCMP school-zone speed campaign were caught travelling over the posted limit.

Throughout September, RCMP Patrol Volunteers and Prince George RCMP Traffic Services officers spent nearly 80 hours monitoring vehicles in school zones around the city.

Police say more than 4,500 vehicles passed through the monitored zones during school hours, with over 1,700, or more than 35 per cent, recorded speeding.

More than 100 motorists failed to slow down for the school zones at all.

“The number of motorists disregarding these speed zones is concerning,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, BC RCMP spokesperson for Northern B.C.

Cooper said drivers need to be particularly vigilant in school and playground zones because children can move quickly and unpredictably.

“Reducing your speed and remaining alert gives you the time and distance needed to react if a child suddenly enters the roadway,” she said. “Slowing down isn’t just about following the law; it’s about protecting lives.”

RCMP also thanked motorists who obeyed the reduced limits.

Police say the results come as October marks Drive Relative to Conditions Month, providing another reminder for motorists to slow down as weather conditions change in Prince George.
