PRINCE GEORGE — Four Prince George city councillors are calling on Mayor Simon Yu to convene a special closed council meeting following recent public comments concerning a confidential city matter.

Councillors Tim Bennett, Ron Polillo, Susan Scott and Cori Ramsay issued a joint statement Thursday, saying recent comments have raised significant questions in the community.

The councillors say council should be given an opportunity to review the matter and determine whether additional information can be responsibly and appropriately released to provide greater context.

According to the statement, Yu was given 24 hours to respond to the request under council’s procedures bylaw. The councillors said that as of noon Thursday, October 15, they had not received a response.

The four councillors say they remain bound by confidentiality and will not disclose protected information, but expressed concern that portions of a confidential matter have entered the public conversation while others with relevant information cannot respond.

The statement also stresses the importance of protecting whistleblowers, maintaining procedural fairness for employees who may face allegations, and respecting confidentiality surrounding workplace matters.

The councillors say transparency and confidentiality are not mutually exclusive and that council remains prepared to meet.

Mayor Simon Yu was approached for comment Thursday at a Regional District of Fraser-Fort George meeting but declined to comment.
