Conservatives sweep to majority as Eby announces resignation
PRINCE GEORGE — British Columbia is preparing for a new political era after voters elected a Conservative majority government in the October 24 provincial election, ending the BC NDP’s time in power and elevating Premier-designate Lorne Doerkson to the province’s highest office.
The election result prompted an emotional concession speech from outgoing Premier David Eby, who confirmed he will step down as both premier and leader of the BC NDP. Speaking to supporters, Eby thanked campaign volunteers, staff and candidates before acknowledging the Conservatives’ victory.
“I spoke to the leader of the Conservative Party, Mr. Doerkson, and acknowledged his success in electing a majority government tonight,” Eby said. “I wished him the best, and quite sincerely. This is an important time. This is a critical time for our province and for our country.”
