Spruce Kings eye divisional dominance

PRINCE GEORGE- The Prince George Spruce Kings return to home ice tonight carrying plenty of confidence after a successful weekend road trip. Sitting at the top of the BCHL standings, the Spruce Kings know the challenge now shifts from chasing teams to defending their position as one of the league’s top clubs.

Despite earning results on the road, associate coach Brad Tobin says his team still has room for improvement, especially when it comes to starting games.

The Spruce Kings found themselves playing from behind in all three contests over the weekend but managed to battle back each time.

“We kind of found ourselves in some holes and we kind of dug ourselves out,” said Tobin. “It shows that we can get behind in a game and actually come back and not get too down on ourselves.”

The ability to respond to adversity has helped Prince George build an impressive early-season record and establish itself as one of the BCHL’s most dangerous teams offensively.

The Spruce Kings currently have four players among the league’s top 20 scorers, a testament to the offensive talent throughout the lineup. However, Tobin says success starts with attention to detail away from the puck.

“Offensively we know that we have a lot of talent, guys that can put the puck in the net,” said Tobin. “If you do what is asked of you defensively, you’re going to get those opportunities in the offensive zone.”

One of those offensive leaders has been forward Ryan Wachtel. After scoring more than 20 goals last season, Wachtel already has 11 goals this year and credits his production to focusing on all areas of the game.

“I think at the end of the day you’ve got to take care of your own end first,” said Wachtel. “Playing defense ultimately sets up playing offense.”

Wachtel believes better starts will come from simplifying the game and focusing on one shift at a time.

“Thinking about first shift, first play and then building shift after shift instead of looking at the game as a whole,” he said.

With 18 of their next 20 games coming against divisional opponents, the Spruce Kings know every point will be hard-earned. Tobin says opposing teams are beginning to circle Prince George on their schedules.

“A lot of teams are looking at us as a marquee matchup now,” said Tobin.

Wachtel echoed that mindset, emphasizing the importance of sticking to the team’s process.

“If you’re not working hard every day, if you’re not focusing on the details, you’re not going to stay up there,” said Wachtel.

The Spruce Kings will look to continue their strong start tonight as they open a critical stretch of divisional play on home ice.
