City Will Take Part In Provincial Review
This was an unparalleled wildfire season in BC; one inherited by the new BC NDP. The work of determining the exact nature of the damages as a result of the fires is just beginning, with government setting out a comprehensive review.
“I think it behooves us, with the impacts of the floods and the wildfires, to have a more comprehensive review to look at what went well and what could be done better,” says Doug Donaldson, the Minister of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations.
The City of Prince George hosted more than 10,000 evacuees from the Cariboo and, almost immediately, identified a challenge: the paperwork. That message was taken to Minister Donaldson and Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth at the Union of BC Municipalities in September. And they’ve been tapped by government again.
“We’ve also been contacted as part of a larger group. Over the next several months, the Province will be undertaking the review that they promised,” says Kathleen Soltis, City Manager. “We have been asked to participate in a session in a few week’s time that will be held in Williams Lake. Our Fire Chief will be part of that session.”
The Province says it wants to have that review concluded in the spring so that any corrections can be applied before the next wildfire season.
