PRINCE GEORGE – RCMP arrested a 32-year-old Prince George man who they characterize as a prolific car thief.

The arrest was made following an aggressive search near the intersection of 5th avenue and Ahbau street which began shortly before 7:00am Friday morning.  Witness say the search closed Ahbau Street for a short time and included the use of several squad cars, the police dog team and even a police helicopter.

A police dog team eventually found the suspect hiding under some stairs at the rear of a home.  He was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property.

The search began when the man was spotted by police in a stolen vehicle.  In an effort to elude police, he drove his vehicle into a curb and lost a tire.  So he fled on foot and initially escaped police.

With the amount of police activity in the area, School District 57 instituted emergency procedures at two schools, Spruceland Traditional and Lac Des Bois Elementary.  The Shelter in Place procedure was put in place meaning doors are locked, window blinds are closed, while normal activities continue within the school.

Prince George RCMP say the man was already being sought for another unrelated vehicle theft. Police say he will be held in custody until his court appearance.
