NANAIMO- What very well could be the most important provincial byelection in history goes down Wednesday in Nanaimo. Most byelections do not bring out the best voter turnout but this one has the potential to shift the power within the government. Premier John Horgan’s minority NDP government could be at a standstill if the Liberals win the seat.

Prince George-Valemont M.L.A. Shirley Bond has voiced her support on social media for Liberal candidate Tony Harris. Prince George-Mackenzie M.L.A. Mike Morris is also supporting Harris as he was in Nanaimo for a few days campaigning with Harris and his team. The byelection has six total candidates:

  • Tony Harris, B.C. Liberals
  • Michele Ney, B.C. Green Party
  • Sheila Malcolmson, B.C. NDP
  • Justin Greenwood, B.C. Conservatives
  • Robin Richardson, Vancouver Island Party
  • Bill Walker, B.C. Libertarian

Harris has strong family ties in Nanaimo as his family has been there for six generations. Ney is the daughter of former long-time Nanaimo mayor Frank Ney.
