PRINCE GEORGE – Despite the sunny weather today some people maybe have been feeling a bit down. Today is Blue Monday, a day which some would say is the most depressing of the year.

The concept of Blue Monday came about in 2005 when a British company said they had come up with an equation to calculate the saddest day of the year. Their equation took factors such as money spent over the holidays, weather and travel days into account.

Blue Monday has become a popular phrase in the countries where the weather conditions mentioned in the equation apply, all of which are in the Northern Hemisphere. However, most experts consider Blue Monday to be pseudoscience, holding no real weight.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, what people are experiencing is seasonal affective disorder, an affliction caused by long winter nights and financial stress from the holidays. the CMHA recommend that if you aren’t feeling quite yourself during this time, getting outside for some sun, or doing things that you find enjoyable can help you feel better.
