Two more allegations of workplace harassment made headlines today. American journalist, Matt Lauer, and TV producer, Andrew Kreisberg, have both been accused of sexual harassment. With the recent spike of allegations making news in recent months, employers should take notice as the holiday season approaches. Alcohol has been a factor in many reports.

“A Christmas party is an extension of the workplace,” said Integris Credit Union’s senior human resources manager, Alex Castley. Castley recommends employers ensure all staff are up to date with the code of conduct and to limit alcohol consumption. “Overconsumption of alcohol is the big one that seems to lead to this behaviour that’s unacceptable.” Another recommendation is making sure taxi vouchers are available to staff to prevent drinking and driving.

Coast Inn of the North general manager, Dave McQuinn, says the number of incidents at events has decreased over the years. “We’ve been so blessed the last number of years that the behaviour of our guests during the holiday season has been exemplary,” he added, “go back 15 years it was significantly different.” He added guests should dress and act appropriately, have fun, and show up to the party. “It’s the business’ opportunity to thank their people because in every business it’s the people that make it special.”
