Exploring Prince George’s Bad Reputation

Jan 4, 2018 | 1:39 PM

Dr Jonathan Swainger is a history professor at UNBC. He’s been studying the City of Prince George’s crime history, as well as the origin of its bad reputation. He’s giving his presentation “Standing at the Gates of Hell” on Monday. The reputation goes all the way back to 1913 when a local minister described Fort George as the “Gates of Hell” to a national conference in Toronto. That grabbed the attention of several national newspapers, and Swainger says PG managed to make the news every decade or so for something that furthered our bad rep. Swainger will give the history lesson as part of the Adult Speaker Series at the Exploration Place on Monday evening at 7. The event is free.
