Valedictorians Reflect On Their Time At UNBC
PRINCE GEORGE- UNBC’s convocation ceremony takes place on Friday. Two students are preparing a little harder than the rest, as they have been chosen to be class valedictorians. Sukhpreet Buttar is the valedictorian for the College of Science and Management. She has been involved in various initiatives on campus, won research awards, worked as a teaching assistant, and volunteered for numerous community organizations. She is graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and a minor in psychology. “It’s an honour and I’m very humbled to be the valedictorian and represent my class that I’ve grown with and studied with and we came here not knowing each other, but slowly you start knowing these people, and it’s so great to speak in front of them,” said Buttar. In the future, she would like to continue her education at UNBC to become a doctor.
Arctica Cunningham is the valedictorian for the College of Arts, Social, and Health Sciences. She is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a joint major in Environmental Studies and Political Science with a minor in Global Studies. “It’s a huge honour, there are so many incredible people graduating this year, to be chosen to represent the grad class is kind of intimidating but a really big honour,” said Cunningham. You may have seen her around campus, as she volunteered for numerous clubs and causes, she served as the Academic Representative for the Northern Undergraduate Student Society before becoming President in 2016, she also sat on UNBC’s Board of Governors as the student representative. Now, she’s the executive director of an environmental non-profit group PGPIRG. “In some ways it hasn’t really sunk in yet that I’m done because I’m still coming to campus every day to come to work,” said Cunningham, “eventually I want to do a Masters so I do have more schooling ahead of me but I’m excited to have a break from studies for a little bit.”
