TERRACE – The public is being asked not to share any personal information with anyone on social media or phone, as a large number of scams have been circulating over recent weeks. Terrace RCMP say they’ve received several complaints about people being scammed by fake revenue collection agencies or being extorted on social media.

“A true collection agency is not going to ask to be paid with iTunes cards,” said Cst Crystal Evelyn, media relations and community liaison officer for the Terrace RCMP. “Take the time to find out more about the organization. Don’t call a number left on a voicemail. Find the organization’s number in the phone book or through another trusted avenue and start asking questions there. If you’re still unsure after that, contact the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre to discuss the situation further.”

Some of the dos and don’ts when you’re on the phone include not being pressured to send money to take advantage of a special offer or deal and contact the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre if you are contacted by someone who says that you’ve won something, but you have to purchase something else to qualify.

Other don’ts. include not giving out any financial information and don’t be afraid to hang up the phone. Other things you should do are, checking your bank statements regularly to make sure they are legitimate, always report phishing, update your computer anti-virus software and confirm that a website’s address line matches the address mentioned in the email.
