Mackenzie Council To Update Emergency Plan

PRINCE GEORGE- The Prince George Fire Centre says it was quick to contain a blaze on the outskirts of Mackenzie over the weekend. The fire has been steady at 47 hectares today. District of Mackenzie Councillor, Joan Atkinson, says the community is working on updating its wildfire protection plan to ensure it’s prepared in the case of a more serious fire. The only highway out of that community was shut down for a brief period of time on Saturday. “What we’re working on right now is so our community is not in that situation, that our one road in and out of town is blocked because of a wildfire,” says Atkinson, “we’re working on our wildfire protection plan which may involve some on the ground prescriptions to make that corridor in and out of town less susceptible to fire.” She adds there are evacuation routes in place on forest service roads in the area. “Of course, if the community did have to be evacuated we have a local radio station that would convey to the community exactly what has to be done and there would be points around the community directing people where they have to go.”

The Prince George Fire Centre determined the fire to be human-caused.
