Council to Discuss Pay Raise

PRINCE GEORGE – City Council will be making a decision on its own pay Monday night.

A Council appointed advisory committee was put together earlier this year to review salaries,  and it is making the recommendation to increase Mayor and Council’s pay as next year a tax free allowance typically allowed by municipally elected politicians will be phased out.  

The advisory is also recommending an increase to reflect rising costs, as Mayor and Council haven’t had a substantial raise since 2010,  leaving the City of Prince George remuneration for elected officials lower than the average among its peer municipalities.

The group recommends the Mayor’s salary be bumped to $127,889 annually,  with council members earning $39,764.

Additional recommendations include an increase to the Mayor’s vehicle stipend, and an expansion of eligible expenses to include attending community events on behalf of Council, attending workshops or seminars directly relevant to municipal affairs; and maintaining membership dues or association fees relevant to their position on Council.
