One Lucky Little Fire Chief

PRINCE GEORGE – For more than 15 years the Prince George Fire Department has hosted “Fire Chief for a Day.” It’s an educational day for students that takes place during Fire Prevention Week, a national initiative to raise public awareness about the dangers of fire.

It’s not a new event for the Fire Department and this year, it wasn’t new for one lucky student either.

Children from Kindergarten to grade three are given the chance each year to win the Fire Chief contest. The Fire Department selects the final four children from a random draw out of nearly four thousand contest entries.

The final four participants were Jonny Rosenburg from Foothills elementary, Murry Wanner from Glenview elementary, Vivian Ingraham from Harwin elementary and Jackson Wium, from Malaspina elementary.

For Jackson Wium, this was his second time in the role of Fire Chief. Fire Prevention Lieutenant Ian Provan was blown away by Jackson’s good luck.

“Unbelievable, he shows up here today and he goes ‘Yeah I’ve been here before,’ and I said to him ‘So you’ve been here on a tour?’ And he goes, ‘No I won this contest two years ago.’ Like I said we open this up to four thousand kids, so two years ago he won and now he won this year so I know he’s young but I told him to go buy a lottery ticket because that’s pretty amazing actually,” says Provan.

Even after all his luck, Jackson says when he grows up, being a firefighter isn’t his dream job. He wants to be a “Youtuber,” he says he already has a channel, he just doesn’t make any money from it yet.
