Men’s Soccer Playoff Hopes Hang In Balance

Rob Goodey was good, but two penalty kicks in one half is a tall task for any keeper.

Though he stopped the first, a line drive to the right corner of the net in the 65th minute from Gurmaan Jhaj, he couldn’t stop Jhaj’s second attempt in the 90th minute. That last-second PK tied the game at 2-2, which would be the final.

The Timberwolves got contribution from Prince George’s Anthony Preston to tie the game in the 37th minute and Francesco Bartolillo added to his UNBC all-time leading scoring number, with his sixth of the season.

The draw leaves UNBC at fourth in the standings with a 5-4-6 record. For the second year in a row, the team now has to wait.

The TRU Wolfpack have been on a mission to sneak into the playoffs this week. They began the tear with a 2-1 upset over the Trinity Western Spartans, and followed that up with a 4-1 win over the UVic Vikes Saturday.

If the team had lost either of those matches, UNBC’s playoff berth would have been solidified.

Thankfully for the Timberwolves, TRU’s most difficult match is set for Sunday. The Wolfpack meet the UBC Thunderbirds Sunday afternoon in Kamloops. UBC is 13-0-2 on the season and have won their last six games.

All UNBC eyes will be on that matchup, as a win for UBC or a draw will mean they’re into their second-straight CanWest playoffs.

Kick-off is at 1pm and the results can be followed here.
