PRINCE GEORGE – Starting Monday, motorists will have to use alternate routes as Westwood Drive will be closed between 22nd Avenue and the Highway 97 on and off-ramp.

New signal operations at the Highway 97 and 22nd Avenue intersection, along with the installation of concrete barriers and signage will be installed. Once the barriers and signage are installed, Westwood Drive will be reopened. to southbound traffic, while northbound traffic will be closed permanently.

The upgrades are part of the response following the death of an international CNC student last June. Other actions the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure took was the removal of a walkway from CNC to a decommissioned bus stop across the highway; signage on campus to direct pedestrians to the Highway 97-22nd Avenue intersection; concrete barrier on the west side of Central Street East at 20th Avenue with signs to direct pedestrians to the intersection; a new sidewalk on Central Street East from 20th Avenue to 22nd Avenue; and the installation of a fence along the Highway 97 median from 22nd Avenue to 18th Avenue.

The signal changes include a dedicated left turn for 22nd Avenue traffic, a countdown feature to the pedestrian crosswalk signal, northbound traffic from Westwood Drive won’t be allowed to enter 22nd Avenue, while alternate access to Highway 97 northbound will be available from the on-ramp east of the overpass on Massey Drive.
