B.C. government asking public to report wildfire-related erosion

PRINCE GEORGE- The B.C. government is asking for the public’s assistance in reporting any erosion concerns or potential flooding risks associated with recent wildfires in the Bulkley-Nechako Region. The assistance is requested so the appropriate authorities can be notified and the problem areas can be addressed.

The 2018 wildfire season left a drastic impact on the forests and surrounding environment and left the ground scorched. Now, these areas may face a higher risk of soil erosion, which could lead to problems arising in waterways and drainage infrastructure resulting in an increase in potential landslides and flooding.

It will take time during this growing season for soil-stabilizing plants to return and mitigate the erosion hazards in the burned areas which is why the government is asking the public to keep an eye out for landslides and erosion areas.

There is a more serious danger if the area gets a lot of heavy rain as the soil cannot act like a sponge and absorb the water as it would naturally.
