KITIMAT – An open house held in Kitimat last night updated residents about construction on the massive project.

LNG Canada hosted the event and brought in construction partners including Coastal Gas Link,  BC Hydro, and JGC FLUOR.

While the bulk of the building on the 670 Km pipeline originating east of Dawson Creek has yet to begin, site clearing for the project has begun and will continue into the summer.

In the meantime, the neighbouring Haisla first nation is working to train its members so they can be employed when the call goes out for more workers.

Chief Crystal Smith says “ we are so used to managing poverty, and all the social aspects that come with poverty,  alcoholism, suicides,  high dropout rates.”

Since the beginning of the LNG Canada project, First Nations communities like Smith’s have had a seat at the table –  for the first time feeling as if their voices and opinions on the project are being heard.

Reporter Catherine Hansen and Video journalist Dave Branco are continuing a trip to northwestern BC,  visiting communities impacted by the LNG Canada pipeline build along the way.
