Council not happy with CN

PRINCE GEORGE – City Council wants to have a chat with CN after it learned the City is on the hook for $118,000 for an upgrade to a rail crossing. The rail giant is adding more security measures to one of the crossings along Otway Road heading into Miworth, such as flashing lights, bells, gates and a constant warning time device. While those around Council Chambers are not bawlking at the dollar-figure, it is about the lack “of a phone call” before the decision was made.

“CN didn’t really give us a heads up,” says Councillor Cori Ramsay. “We, of course, spent so many hours going through the budget, line-by-line and to pay $130,000 from contingency when we’re only three months into the year is a huge hit to us financially.”

Councillor Ramsay put forward a resolution to have the matter investigated by Council’ Intergovernmental Relations Committee, adding rail safety has come up as an issue of concern to the Northern Central Local Government Association. That’s because rail traffic between Prince George and Prince Rupert has increased exponentially with the expansion of the Port of Prince Rupert.
